Forming the future tense using werden

The structure of a sentence in the future tense is as follows: subject + conjugated form of werden werden, Präsens + rest of sentence + infinitive verb.

Anna wird nach Berlin kommen.

Anna will come to Berlin.

The future tense tends to be used primarily in written German:

Der Präsident wird morgen in Paris ankommen. (Ankündigung)

The President will arrive in Paris tomorrow. (announcement)

Das Klima wird immer wärmer werden. (Prognose)

The climate will become steadily warmer. (prediction)

Anna wird das Hotel schon nicht verkaufen. (Vermutung/Hoffnung)

Surely Anna will not sell the hotel. (supposition/hope)

Note: In spoken German, we use the present tense and a time expression to talk about everyday events in the future:

Anna fliegt morgen nach Berlin.

Anna’s flying to Berlin tomorrow.

Caroline macht später einen Kuchen.

Caroline’s going to bake a cake later.

Gehen wir am Sonntag in den Park?

Shall we go to the park on Sunday?
