The verbs essere (to be) and avere (to have) in the present tense

We use the verb essere (to be) to express nationality or profession, or to describe a person or object:

Essere
Io sono
Tu sei
Lui/lei è
Noi siamo
Voi siete
Loro sono

Anna Baldoria è italiana ed è una chirurga.

Anna Baldoria is Italian and she is a surgeon.

We use the verb avere (to have) to express age or to indicate possession:

Avere
Io ho
Tu hai
Lui/lei ha
Noi abbiamo
Voi avete
Loro hanno

Ha 40 anni.

She is 40 years old (literally, “she has 40 years”).

Ha una valigia molto grande per viaggiare. 

She has a very large suitcase for travelling.
