The future perfect tense
We form the future perfect tense using the simple future tense of the verb essere essere, futuro or avere avere, futuro + the past participle of the main verb.
Luca avrà finito il lavoro alle 18. finire, futuro anteriore
Luca will have finished work at 6pm. finire, futuro anteriore
Quando noi partiremo, tu sarai arrivato a destinazione. arrivare, futuro anteriore
When we leave, you will have arrived at your destination. arrivare, futuro anteriore
The future perfect tense is used to:
- express one future action that occurs before another
Quando arriveremo, Mario sarà già partito. partire, futuro anteriore
By the time we arrive, Mario will have already left. partire, futuro anteriore
- express an assumption in the past tense
Sarai stato contento della tua festa ieri! essere, futuro anteriore
You must have been happy with your party yesterday! (literally, “You will have been happy….”). essere, futuro anteriore
- express doubt or uncertainty, especially in spoken Italian
Giulia non è ancora arrivata, avrà perso il tram. perdere, futuro anteriore
Giulia has not yet arrived, she must have missed the tram (literally, "…she will have missed the tram). perdere, futuro anteriore
The future perfect tense is often used with expressions such as dopo che (after), quando (when), appena (as soon as), già (already).
Appena avrò scritto il documento, te lo invierò. scrivere, futuro anteriore
As soon as I have written the document, I will send it to you (literally, "As soon as I will have written…). scrivere, futuro anteriore
Dopo che avrò chiamato il medico, le invierò i risultati delle analisi. chiamare, futuro anteriore
After I call the doctor, I will send him the test results (literally, “After I will have called….”). chiamare, futuro anteriore
