Comparative structures with verbs
Comparatives with verbs are constructed thus:
- Superiority (+):
verb + más que
Carolina come más que Ana.
Carolina eats more than Ana.
más (...) de lo + past participle
Llegaron más tarde de lo acordado.
They arrived later than agreed.
más (...) de lo que + conjugated verb
La casa es más grande de lo que pensaba.
The house is bigger than I thought.
- Inferiority (-):
verb+ menos que
Rodrigo trabaja menos que Magda.
Rodrigo works less than Magda.
no + verb + tanto como
Rodrigo no trabaja tanto como Magda.
Rodrigo doesn't work as much as Magda.
menos (...) de lo + past participle
Llegaron menos personas de lo previsto.
Fewer people than anticipated turned up.
menos (...) de lo que + conjugated verb
Esto es menos difícil de lo que crees.
This is less difficult than you think.
- Equality (=):
verb + tanto como
El coche corre tanto como la moto.
The car goes as fast as the motorbike.
tan/tanto/a (...) como + conjugated verb
Hizo tanto frío como imaginaba.
It was as cold as I imagined.
Note: when forming comparatives with a verb that has a dependent preposition (hablar de…, colaborar con…, etc.), we put the preposition after the word(s) that express the comparison.
Él habla más de ti que de ella.
He talks more about you than about her.
Me preocupo menos por el dinero que por la salud.
I worry less about money than (about) health.
Colaboramos tanto con España como con Argentina.
We collaborate both with Spain and (with) Argentina.
