Talking about large quantities: a lot of, many and much
A lot of /lots of, much and many are used to indicate large quantities. Use:
- A lot of or lots of + noun, especially in informal and spoken language.
There are a lot of/lots of tourists.
I can see a lot of/lots of water.
- Many + countable plural noun (generally ending in -s).
There are many guests in the hotel.
- Much + uncountable noun (food, money, time, water etc.), mainly in negative sentences.
There is not much food on the table.
Note: in a question, use how many + countable noun, or how much + uncountable noun.
