The subjunctive preterit and conditional constructions
我们来区分一下不同形式的虚拟式:
• 非真实的现在(或情态过去时):
If she were at the park with us, she would be having a good time. 如果她能在公园和我们一起，她应该度过一个愉快的时光。
If only I didn't have so much work to do, I could go out drinking. 但凡我没如此多的工作要做，我就会出去喝一杯了。
I wish you didn't live so far away.我希望你不要住这么远。
• 不真实的过去(或者情态过去完成时):
If Polly had seen this mess, she would have called the police. 如果是宝莉看到这腌臜事，她肯定就给打电话报警了。
He wishes she hadn't left. 他希望她没有走。(事实上她已经走了。)
If only you hadn't wasted your teenage years playing video games. 如果你没有浪费你青年时光在打游戏上就好了。
I would rather he hadn't come to this meeting. 我宁愿他没来参加这次的会议。
• 条件式，在将来时基础上(were+带to的动词不定式, would或could):
If he were to show up, Willy would have to arrest him. 只要他露面，威利就会逮捕他。
I wish she would wake up and smell the coffee. (idiom meaning 'to pay attention to what is happening') 我希望她会注意发生什么事情。
I would if I could, but I can't so I won't. 我希望我可以，但是我不能，所以我不愿。
