Kein vs. nicht

We use kein/e before a noun:

Kein Kollege kann mir helfen. 

No colleague can help me.

Wir haben keine Zeit. 

We have no time.

Anna isst kein Fleisch. 

Anna eats no meat.

Ich lese keine Zeitungen.

I read no newspapers.

We use nicht to negate an action or state, i.e. when using a verb.

Tim will nicht nach Berlin fahren.

Tim does not want to drive to Berlin.

Betty lebt nicht mehr.

Betty is no longer alive.

Sie sind nicht getrennt.

They are not separated.
