Verbs ending in -care and -gare in the subjunctive.
Reminder: we form the subjunctives of regular -are verbs by adding the endings -i, -i, -i, -iamo, -iate or -ino.
Penso che Ciro abiti a Roma.
I think Ciro lives in Rome.
È meglio che camminiate invece che prendere il taxi.
It's better that you walk instead of taking a cab.
With verbs ending in -care and -gare, regardless of the person ‘doing’ the verb, we add an h after the c or the g, as follows:
Tu giochi/giuochi
Lui/lei giochi/giuochi
Noi giochiamo
Voi giochiate
Loro giochino/giuochino
Tu neghi
Lui/lei neghi
Noi neghiamo
Voi neghiate
Loro neghino
Other commonly used -care and -gare verbs include pagare (to pay), cercare (to look for), comunicare (to communicate), elencare (to list), navigare (to sail, to browse, to navigate), sporcare (to soil), caricare (to load), pregare (to pray, to request), litigare (to argue), praticare (to practise).
Voglio che carichiate le valigie nel baule.
I want you to load the suitcases into the trunk.
Basta che non sporchiate dappertutto!
