Ordinal numbers (“first”, “second”, etc.) from 1 to 10
1º, 1ª → primo/a
2º, 2ª → secondo/a
3º, 3ª → terzo/a
4º, 4ª → quarto/a
5º, 5ª → quinto/a
6º, 6ª → sesto/a
7º, 7ª → settimo/a
8º, 8ª → ottavo/a
9º, 9ª → nono/a
10º, 10ª → decimo/a
Ordinal numbers agree, in both gender and number, with the noun that follows them.
Preferisco la seconda parte del libro.
I prefer the second part of the book.
Lui è il mio quarto figlio.
He is my fourth son.
Notes:
- We always use 1° (1st) to refer to the first day of the month.
Il 1° maggio è la Festa dei Lavoratori.
May 1st is Labour Day.
- For the names of kings, popes, etc. and to refer to centuries, we use Roman numerals.
La regina Elisabetta II (seconda). L'VIII (ottavo) secolo.
Queen Elizabeth II (second). The 8th (eighth) century.
