Io or me? Tu or te?
Reminder: personal pronouns Pronomi personali soggetto generally go before the verb and are used to emphasize the subject of the verb or avoid ambiguity.
Io ho 100 anni.
I am 100 years old (literally, “I have 100 years”).
Noi andiamo in piscina.
We are going to the swimming pool.
When it comes after a preposition, io changes to me, and tu to te.
Non posso vivere senza tu te.
I can't live without you.
Fallo per io me.
Do it for me.
After anche (also) and persino/perfino (even), we use io and tu.
Anche tu devi lavorare.
You also have to work.
Persino io so cucinare.
Even I know how to cook.
Notes:
- We use io e te or tu e(d) io (you and I) instead of io e tu when they are the subject of the phrase.
Io e tu siamo amici. Io e te siamo amici. Tu e io siamo amici.
You and I are friends.
Io e tu ordiniamo una birra. Io e te ordiniamo una birra. Tu e io ordiniamo una birra.
You and I order a beer.
- In spoken language, it's common to use te (you) instead of tu (you), but this is incorrect in written Italian.
Tu sei di Roma? Te sei di Roma?
Are you from Rome?
Tu lavori con Magda? Te lavori con Magda?
Do you work with Magda?
