Forming the present tense of verbs ending in -care or -gare
Reminder: we conjugate the present tense of regular verbs ending in -are using the endings -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate and -ano.
Magda canta una canzone.
Magda is singing a song.
Visito Roma ogni anno.
I visit Rome every year.
In the case of verbs ending in -care and -gare, we add an h after the c or g for the tu (singular, informal “you”) and noi (we) forms, as follows:
Tu comunichi
Lui/lei comunica
Noi comunichiamo
Voi comunicate
Loro comunicano
Tu paghi
Lui/lei paga
Noi paghiamo
Voi pagate
Loro pagano
The other most common verbs ending in -care and -gare include cercare (to look for), giocare (to play), elencare (to list), navigare (to sail), negare (to deny, to refuse), sporcare (to make dirty), caricare (to load), pregare (to beg, to pray), litigare (to argue) and praticare (to practice).
Noi paghiamo il conto al ristorante.
We pay the check at the restaurant.
Tu sporchi sempre il pavimento.
You always make the floor dirty.
