Ed and ad
E (and) and a (to, in, at) become ed and ad before a word that begins with the same vowel (so, e and a respectively).
Luca e Beatrice preparano la cena → Luca ed Emma preparano la cena.
A Magda non piace il dottor Mancini → Ad Anna non piace il dottor Mancini.
There are some common, set expressions that use ed and ad, regardless of the vowel that comes afterwards:
ad esempio
ad eccezione
ad ogni modo
ed io
Note: in general, ed and ad are not so common in spoken Italian.
Marco e io siamo andati al mare.
Marco and I went to the coast.
