Contractions with definite articles
Reminder: definite articles Articoli determinativi come before a specific object or an identifiable person.
Prendi la valigia nell’armadio.
Take the suitcase in the wardrobe.
Il responsabile è molto professionale.
The manager is very professional.
When articles follow a preposition, sometimes they form a contraction:
Vado al (a + il) lavoro.
I’m going to work.
L’hotel della (di + la) signora Betty è storico.
Betty's hotel is historic.
This is how each article combines with prepositions:

Notes:
- The contractions colla (con + la) and col (con + il) (with + the) are common in speech, but in writing you're more likely to come across con la and con il.
- The prepositions per (for), tra (between) and fra (between) don't form a contraction when used with an article.
C’è grande solidarietà tra i cittadini.
There is strong solidarity among the citizens.
Per la festa farò una torta.
I'll make a cake for the party.
