Adverbs ending in -mente

Adverbs ending in -mente are formed from the corresponding adjective.

Happily

They are formed by taking the feminine form of the adjective and adding -mente.

Chiaro → chiara → chiaramente

Clear (masc.) → clear (fem.) → clearly

Educato → educata → educatamente

Polite (masc.) → polite (fem.) → politely 

If the adjective ends in -e, we simply add -mente immediately after it.

Felice → felicemente

Happy → happily

Semplice → semplicemente

Simple → simply

Note

  • if the adjective ends in -le or -re, we drop the final -e.

Umile → umilmente

Modest → modestly

Particolare → particolarmente

Particular → particularly

  • There are some expressions formed by a preposition + an adjective/adverb/name that can be replaced by an adverb in -mente by eliminating the preposition.

da lontano → lontanamente

from afar → remotely

all'improvviso → improvvisamente

suddenly → suddenly

alla cieca → ciecamente

blindly → blindly
