Vosotros or ustedes? Differences in usage between Spain and Latin America
The personal pronouns vosotros/as and ustedes Pronombres personales are used to talk directly to several people at once. However, they are used differently in different parts of the Spanish-speaking world.
In Spain:
- Vosotros/as (the plural of tú) is used in informal situations.
Vosotros sois mis mejores amigos ser, presente
You are my best friends.
- Ustedes (the plural of usted) is used in formal situations.
Ustedes dirigen la escuela dirigir, presente
You run the school.
In Latin America:
- Vosotros/as is not used.
- Ustedes (the plural of both tú and usted) is used in both formal and informal situations.
Ustedes me hacen reír mucho hacer, presente
You guys really crack me up.
Ustedes deben respetar la ley deber, presente
You must respect the law.
Note: in the Canaries and Andalusia, it is the same as in Latin America: ustedes is used for both formal and informal situations.
