The imperative of verbs ending in -zar
In the imperative, verbs ending in -zar are irregular, changing the z for a c with the pronouns usted (singular formal “you”), nosotros/as (we, us) and ustedes (plural formal “you”).
Actualizar → Actualice la aplicación.
To update → Update the app.
Realizar → Realicen el trabajo a tiempo.
To perform → Perform the work on time.
These are the conjugations:
Actualizar
(usted) actualice
(nosotros/as) actualicemos
(vosotros/as) actualizad
(ustedes) actualicen
Realizar en
(usted) realice
(nosotros/as) realicemos
(vosotros/as) realizad
(ustedes) realicen
Aplazar
(usted) aplace
(nosotros/as) aplacemos
(vosotros/as) aplazad
(ustedes) aplacen
Other verbs that follow this pattern are: danzar (to dance), cruzar (to cross), rechazar (to reject) and alcanzar (to reach, to achieve).
Crucen la calle.
Cross the street.
Rechacemos la propuesta.
We reject the proposal.
Note: some -zar verbs have a second irregularity in their root.
Empezar → No empiece todavía empezar, imperativo presente.
To start → Don't start yet.
Comenzar → Comiencen a comer comenzar, imperativo presente.
To start → Start eating.
