The different forms of “you”: tú, usted, vosotros/as and ustedes
Tú, usted, vosotros/vosotras and ustedes are all personal pronouns Pronombres personales meaning “you”.
- Tú is the singular “you” for informal contexts (family, friends, at a party, etc.).
Tú eres mi mejor amigo.
You are my best friend.
- Vosotros/Vosotras is the plural “you” for informal contexts.
Vosotros sois mis mejores amigos.
You are my best friends.
Vosotras sois Ana y Magda.
You are Ana and Magda.
- Usted is the singular “you” for formal contexts (addressing older people, strangers, authority figures, etc.).
¿Usted es rey de España?
Are you the King of Spain?
- Ustedes is the plural “you” for formal contexts.
Ustedes dirigen la escuela.
You manage the school.
Notes:
- In Latin America, we use ustedes in both formal and informal contexts (vosotros/as is not used).
- In Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and some other Latin American regions, we say vos instead of tú.
