Recordar vs. acordar
The verbs recordar (remember) and acordarse (reflexive form of “remember”) follow different structures.
Me acuerdo de la primera vez que te vi.
I remember the first time I saw you.
Recuerdo el vestido que llevaba el día de mi graduación.
I remember the dress I wore on my graduation day.
Recordar/se:
- When it means to remember something (recordar algo), it follows the structure:
Recordar conjugated + definite/indefinite article.
¿Recuerdas la vez que nos perdimos en la montaña?
Remember the time we got lost in the mountains?
- When it expresses that a thing or person reminds us of something, we follow the structure:
Noun + pronoun IO + recuerda/recuerdan + definite/indefinite article.
Esta canción me recuerda la época de la universidad.
This song reminds me of my college days.
Tus pantalones me recuerdan los que llevaba mi abuelo.
Your pants remind me of the pants my grandfather wore.
Acordar/se:
- When it means to remember something, it is a reflexive verb, it is conjugated with a reflexive pronoun Pronombres reflexivos and follows the structure:
Acordarse + de
¿Te acuerdas de tu primer amor?
Do you remember your first love?
Nunca me acuerdo del día de tu cumpleaños.
I never remember your birthday.
- When it means to agree on something, it is not reflexive.
Acordar + verb/noun
Los propietarios acordaron bajar el precio del apartamento.
The owners agreed to lower the price of the apartment.
Ana y Carolina acordaron los platos del menú.
Ana and Carolina agreed on the menu items.
