Muy or mucho?

We use muy (very) before adjectives and adverbs:

Magda es muy simpática.

Hablas español muy bien.

You speak Spanish very well.

We use mucho/a and muchos/as (much/many) before nouns:

Aquí hay mucha gente.

There are many people here.

En el Hotel Borbollón hay muchos gatos.

We use mucho (a lot) after verbs. In this case, it is invariable.

Note:

  • We use mucho before mejor (better), peor (worse), mayor (larger), menor (smaller), más (more), menos (less), antes (before) and después (after).

Magda cocina mucho mejor que Nacho.

Magda cooks a lot better than Nacho.

Ellos han llegado mucho antes de la hora prevista.

They've arrived much earlier than expected.

  • Muy (very) and mucho (much/many) are never used in the same sentence. To add emphasis to mucho, we add the suffix -ísimo/a: muchísimo (very much/many).

Hace muchísimo calor.

Tengo muchísima hambre.
