Este or esto?

Este and esto are two demonstrative pronouns that we use to refer to something that is physically close (this) Demostrativos cerca.

Este anillo me gusta mucho.

I really like this ring.

Esto que llevas es muy bonito.

This thing you are wearing is very nice.

Este is used:

  • Before masculine and singular nouns to refer to things, people or periods of time.

Este hombre es muy guapo.

This man is very handsome.

Este mes es mi cumpleaños.

This month is my birthday.

Esto is neutral and is only used in the singular:

  • To replace something whose name we don't know or don't want to say.

—¿Qué es esto? — es el código para abrir la puerta del despacho.

-What is this? -It's the code to open the office door.

Esto está buenísimo.

This is very good.

  • To refer to abstract situations.

Esto es muy complicado. Esto = una situación

This is very complicated. (This = a situation)

  • It is not used before a noun; it is placed at the end of a sentence or before a verb.

Note: esto is never used with people, only with things or concepts.
