to pick up: to lift, to raise (something or someone); to answer (the telephone); to acquire or obtain
To pick up has several different meanings:
Pick up the telephone! Answer the phone!
Pick up your clothes from the floor.
Philip picked up three girls at the bar last night. In this case to pick up means to meet and possibly more!
He picked up the check. He paid the bill.
to pick (someone) up (from the airport): to collect (someone from the airport) and drive them home

to pick up (something at the store): to buy, to purchase (something at the shop)
to pick (someone) up (in a bar): to flirt with and seduce (someone in a bar)
