Will you marry me? The future simple with will
We use the future simple for predictions, spontaneous decisions and future events beyond our control (birthdays, the weather, etc.).
I think my team will win the match. (prediction)
I'm hungry. I will have a sandwich. (spontaneous decision)
My mother will turn 80 next year. (future event beyond our control)
To conjugate verbs in the future simple, use these structures:
- Affirmative form → will + infinitive without to
I will visit Australia one day. (to visit)
- Negative form: will not + infinitive without to
It will not snow. (to snow)
- Question form → will + subject + infinitive without to + …?
-Will you marry me ? (to marry)
There are also two common short forms: will → ’ll; will not → won’t.
She will ask the question. → She'll ask the question.
We will not be on time. → We won't be on time.
Note: there are more ways to express future actions in English, but don't worry about them now, as you will find out more about them later in your learning journey.
