The present simple tense: irregular verbs (affirmative form)

Reminder: to form the present simple tense of most verbs, we use the infinitive form without to for all pronouns, except for he/she/it, where an -s is added at the end.

To call → I call my mother every evening / He calls his mother every evening

To eat → They eat a pizza / She eats a pizza

Some verbs are irregular with he/she/it pronouns:

  • Verbs ending in -s, -sh, -z, -ch, -x, or -o: add -es

To watch → He watches a movie

To fix → Shorty fixes the toilet

To go She goes to the theatre

To do → Magda does her job well

  • Verbs ending in a consonant + -y: remove the -y and add -ies

To study → He studies English

To reply → Betty replies to your email
