Modal verbs: could, would and should
Reminder: could, would and should are modal verbs. They have a single form that we use alongside the infinitive form of a verb to modify its meaning.
Could you pass me the water, please?
You should speak louder.
Use could :
- to ask for permission politely or to make polite offers and requests. Could is more polite than can.
Could I ask a question, please?
We could bring some chocolates.
Use would , mainly followed by like:
- to talk about preferences and desires or to ask about them.
I would like to order a Caesar salad, please.
Would you like a cup of tea?
Use should :
- to give recommendations or advice politely and to make suggestions.
You should spend more time with your family.
She should try their desserts.
Note: you could also use may to ask for permission politely, but it is less common.
May I see your driving license, madam?
