Verbs ending in -re with past participles ending in -u

The verbs rendre (to return) and vendre (to sell) have past participles that end in -U. To create them, remove the -RE from the end and add -U (rendre → rendu, vendre → vendu). The same goes for: entendre (to hear), attendre (to wait), répondre (to answer), perdre (to lose), rompre (to break), vaincre (to vanquish) and descendre (to descend). They are conjugated in the passé composé in the following way :

entendre en
J'ai entendu
Tu as entendu
Il a entendu/elle a entendu
Nous avons entendu
Vous avez entendu
Ils ont entendu/elles ont entendu
battre en
J'ai battu
Tu as battu
Il a battu/elle a battu
Nous avons battu
Vous avez battu
Ils ont battu/elles ont battu
répondre en
J'ai répondu
Tu as répondu
Il a répondu/elle a répondu
Nous avons répondu
Vous avez répondu
Ils ont répondu/elles ont répondu
descendre en
Je suis descendu
Tu es descendu
Il est descendu/elle est descendue
Nous sommes descendus
Vous êtes descendus
Ils sont descendus/elles sont descendues
