Accents
Accents can change the way in which a vowel is pronounced.
(finds) ≠ (found)
The two most important accents are as follows:
- e → é
(coffee, café)
(stylish, elegant)
- e → è
(mother)
(last)
Comments:
- ë and ï are pronounced as separate letters.
(Haiti)
- ê is pronounced , and â, ô, û are pronounced a, o, u.
(party)
(hotel)
- Some words (a/ à, ou/ où, la/là, etc.) take on a different meaning when they have accents, though their pronunciation remains the same.
